Is this real? The world we live in has been here long before us and assumedly, in one way or another, it will still be here long after us as well, but what if it isn’t real? What if our reality is a manufactured one that we find ourselves trekking through the same way as all the ancestors of eons past? What if true “reality” is something that will forever remain outside of the knowledge seeking fingers of humanity as a whole? These are some quite daunting questions one might ask themselves while delving through the waters of online conspiracy theories, but in that tumultuous sea of truth seeking we all need to stop and ask ourselves: “does it matter if its real or not?”

The idea that this universe of ours is nothing but a large computer program, and we are just small bits of code wondering around with green gems on our heads, is one that has been growing in popularity over the last few years in a fair amount of internet communities. Much of the time you come across arguments for “patterns” emerging in nature that could only be used to prove that everything around us is being constantly rendered before our very eyes, much the opposite of that friend we all have that believes every time a leaf hits you in the face while you walk down the street it is a sign from the universe that your milk has just gone bad in the fridge. However, when presented with all this “evidence” of the fabricated nature of our world there is a large void that seems to appear- why does it matter?

What would you even do with the information if you woke up tomorrow and found out you lived in a computer? If everything you have ever known or ever will know is taking place inside of a program, does it really matter that much? Does it change anything about your day-to-day life? If this has passed for the real world this long, then why can’t it keep passing for it? Every emotion you have ever felt is still as real as it needs to be. You have still got all your memories. Why does it matter if they are “real” or not? If a computer can give you all the same sense of joy and fulfillment, then why bother with life itself?
